In a Rush (Au Galop): Cannes Review

CANNES -Ticking off a laundry list of French art film prerequisites Seductive novelist, check! Gorgeous mistress, check! A dying patriarch, a country house and an inheritance, check! while bringing nothing really new to the table, In a Rush (Au galop) reps a rather generic directorial debut for Gallic actor Louis-Do de Lencquesaing (The Father of My Children, Polisse). Featuring strong performances especially from the filmmakers daughter, Alice (Summer Hours) yet very little in terms of creativity and cinematic prowess, this Cannes Critics Week title should trot around fests and Francophone territories, while major offshore play remains a stretch.

40-something Paul (de Lencquesaing pre) is an accomplished author with suicidal tendencies, as evidenced by an opening scene where he dangerously hangs off a bridge in Paris, staring into the abyss. But things quickly pick up when he stops by his publisher (Denis Podalydes, underused) and meets the irresistible Ada (Valentia Cervi), whos already shacked up with the sweet-faced businessman, Christian (Laurent Capelluto), with whom she has a daughter, Zoe (Enola Romo-Renoir).
Paul being Paul (or just being French), such a fact does little to deter him from pursuing his conquest, although the sudden death of his father (Bernard Verley) and its effect on his spirited mother (Marthe Keller) throws a few curveballs his way. Soon enough, though, Paul and Ada begin their illicit relationship, which seems to consist mainly of the former admiring the latters physical attributes, and the latter admiring the formers wit and intelligence. Such is the plight of the writer.

As the plot points crisscross and Ada is eventually driven to choose between the two men she claims to love, both Paul and the narrative start to turn in circles, and theres hardly enough traction in the characters mostly Parisian archetypes to keep things engrossing through the final reel. Slightly more palatable, though never fully developed, is the story between Pauls smart-alecky daughter, Camille (de Lencquesaing fille), and a troubled soccer player (Ralph Amoussou) who winds up interned at a local psychiatric hospital.
If the cast in generally convincing and the tech credits passable, In a Rush never takes things far enough either emotionally or thematically to place it above the fray of any number of French dramedies that deal with sex, death and love usually in that order. Since de Lencquesaing has already proved himself a worthy presence in the works of filmmakers like Maiwenn, Emmanuel Mouret and Mia-Hansen Love, one gets the impression here that his talent is best expressed on the other side of the lens.

Matchbox Twenty Reveal Title, Release Date for First Album in 10 Years

Matchbox Twenty’s first album in a decade has a title and release date. Northwill be out on September 4, the band announced on Twitter, adding that the album’s first single, “She’s So Mean,” is due out in June. North marks only the fourth full-length from Rob Thomas and crew. Their last effort, 2002′s More Than You Think You Are, peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart. 'Piranha 3DD' Star David Koechner on 'Trident Practice' for 'Anchorman 2' (Video)

In his current role as the proprietor of an adult water park in Piranha 3DD, David Koechner squares off against a hungry school of prehistoric flesh eaters with any weapon he can find. Although it was his Evening News teammate Brick Tamland (Steve Carell) who used a trident in Anchorman to help suppress a gang scuffle, Koechner said he was able to practice with the weapon for a possible showdown in the forthcoming sequel Anchorman 2. Unlike in past years, when the final showdown was all but predetermined — Adam Lambert vs. Kris Allen, Carrie Underwood vs. Bo Bice, Scotty McCreery vs. Lauren Alaina next weeks Season 11 finale could have featured any combination of the top three. 'Blade Runner' Writer in Talks to Pen Sequel for Director Ridley Scott

Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection”Blade Runner” Original Blade Runner writer Hampton Fancher is in talks to pen an untitled sequel to the classic sci-fi film for director Ridley Scott and studio Alcon Entertainment. Michael Becker / FOX We lost track of how many standing ovations Joshua Ledet has had since the start of season 11 but its somewhere between 15 and 20. And Wednesdays Top 3 performance show was no different. Starting with Etta James Id Rather Go Blind, chosen by Randy Jackson, Ledet went for message in song two, John Lennons Imagine, then pushed the showmanship to the max with Mary J. Bliges No More Drama. In the end, there was plenty, but Ledet left it all on the stage, then talked to THR about how the night played out. Cannes 2012: Canadian Filmmaker Ron Mann to Direct Robert Altman Doc

TORONTO Veteran Canadian filmmaker Ron Mann is to direct Altman, a feature documentary about the late American film director Robert Altman, for Sphinx Productions, EPIX, Canadian pay TV service The Movie Network and sales agent Submarine Entertainment.Related TopicsCannes Film Festival 2012 The deal, unveiled in time for the Cannes Film Festival, was negotiated by David Koh, Dan Braun, Josh Braun and Stanley Buchthal for Submarine Entertainment and Dakota Group, along with Mann of Sphinx Productions. The documentary will follow Altman from growing up in Depression-era Kansas City to receiving in 2006 an honorary Oscar to recognize his long and iconoclastic career. Gavin Smith Family Calls Off Weekend Search for Missing Fox Executive

A search for missing 20th Century Foxexecutive Gavin Smith scheduled for this weekend has been canceled. The familys public relations counselor, Howard Bragman, said the decision came after consultations with the LA County Sheriff’s Department and the Smith family. There is not a specific area of defined interest to make this effort productive at this time, Bragman said in a statement released Wednesday evening.
